Crafting Gone Bad

I am an amateur crafty person. I mean I can use a glue gun, sew a little and do some DIY projects, but I am by no means a artistic person by nature. I guess I would be more of a left-brained person.

But sometimes I get in an artsy craftsy mood and things sort of click together on the right side of my brain and I create something sort of neat. Something inspirational.

This is not one of those times.

When I tea-stained my chenille stems for my candy canes I also did some bumpy stems for a different project. I wanted to make these cute guys

which are a take off of these vintage chenille santas.

Instead they came out looking like this.

Even scarier up close.

Does it help if I bend his arms in half? Maybe not.

These guys will have to wait until my crafty side kicks in again.

Hope it's before Christmas.

  1. I do not attempt to craft at all. I disagree you are artistic and this blog proves it. Start over with these you can do it!

  2. Okay .... your title is hilarious!

I like to craft too. I hear that every craft project goes through an "ugly" stage before it's completely done...

Let's just say that I have lots of complete projects that are still in their "ugly" stage.

  3. Good Start ~ Now to Tweek them a bit.... The Top Santa is the Aim For Santa, Right ~ You just used too many Chenilles... Use 1 for arms folded in half & glue head to top bend part then 2 for the body legs, bend up the sharp wired end, Alittle Glue & Viola ~ You Have it!

I think you must have actually staged this, since you have an Incredibly Creative Blog....

    Have a Great Thanksgiving...

  4. I once had an art professor who would say if your piece was ugly/ not right, it wasn't because it was bad -- it just wasn't finished yet. I'm with Cheryl: Good start, now go tweak them a bit! And thanks for the Saturday morning chuckle :)

  5. I think they are fine. I would ink the edges of the heads and maybe spray a little glimmer mist on them to age them. Just a suggestion as I am not an artist. They are cute.

  8. Let's try this again---
Way too cute. Don't be so hard on yourself.
Some days we have it and some days we don't--no matter what we are doing.

  9. I love them, Pam~ maybe clip the arms a little shorter, and curl the ends for hands? I've made jack-o-lantern men like these...and just love the look, especially that cute dog!

  10. OMG Pam! I am not gonna lie to you (like SOME people-wink-wink)- Those are awful!!! LOL...We have ALLL had projects that just don't work...AND...the more we work on them the worse they get. I say scrap them and start from scratch. I am sorry but I am STILL laughing.

ps...MyHero said they might make good cat toys tied to a string...cuz...cats aren't fussy!

  11. Now wait just a minute--maybe your's are really the right way--and those vintage ones are the wrong way!!!! I personally feel the vintage santa's arms are too short and stubby!!!! so there--you are doing ok--like the snowman one and the dog isn't too bad either --have fun and thanks for the chuckle!!!

  13. There you are, with another cute idea. When I got to the end I could see Sheba on the side, looking over your work. She seems to approve. Hugs

  14. Thank goodness you are not alone!! My family actually likes them, we really really do!!! They are kooky and cute, and we love that! So I am going to say, great job Pam!!

  15. You made me smile this morning...THANKS!!! A huge part of being crafty, at least as it applies to me, is trail & error. Lately I've been making jewelry, my new passion. When I really love the way a piece turns out, I can't part with it, I just keep it & let my etsy store go empty. But for as many of those I have, I also have disasters that I immmediately take a part & think, "What the hey was I thinkin!!" LOL
All we can do is listen to what Dory say's in 'Finding Nemo'...Keep On Swimming, Keep On Swimming...Keep.....

  16. I think they will look really cute with some tweaking! :-)
And believe me.....as a person who has been doing craft and craft projects since I was a girl...I have created many things that were...let's just say it.....really, really bad. Sometimes I get an idea but it just doesn't turn out right in the making. Happens to us all. I think these are still cute and a great idea and if you're like me, you'll just play around with them until they turn out right!

  17. This time last year I started sewing birds. I stuffed them, and that's as far as I got. The spirit just didn't move me any farther. I ran across those the other day in a box, and thought: should I make these into ornaments? The jury is still out. The spirit still doesn't move me!

  18. I wouldn't say that these were ugly, just a little strange. I applaud you for being able to share the "ugly" side of crafting--when things go wrong. You are much braver than I!

  19. I wouldn't have even gotten that far-my abilities are lacking in that department. I think they're still neat!

  20. Thanks for all the comments and suggestions! I tweaked them a little today and I'll post pictures of them later tonight. They're still not great, but I think they look a little better. Well, a tiny bit better.

  21. I applaud you too for posting about something that didn't go exactly as planned. I see in your comment above that you tweaked them so I'm looking forward to seeing the changes.
