It was fairly tarnished which I normally love, but I have plans to use it in my Christmas decor and I wanted it shiny for that project.

So with a little bit of my silver polish and a whole lot of elbow grease I got it cleaned up.

Except for the lid. As you can see the lid isn't all shiny and bright like the rest of it.

Now when I bought this I did not think the lid was original to the set, but I wasn't really concerned about it since I plan to use it without the lid.
But if you look at the flower at the top of the lid handle

it matches the flower on the left of the base handles.

I still don't know why the lid isn't shining up, but for $1.91 for the set (Pyrex insert included) I'll live with it.
I'll be linking with Coastal Charm's Nifty Thrifty Tuesday later today.
It's a darling set. For our twenty-fifth anniversary party last year, we used lots and lots of thrifted silver -- candlesticks, tea sets repurposed to hold flowers, silver trays for the appetizers, etc.. I adore vintage silver!
ReplyDeleteNice score! Finding silver for that price is so difficult anymore. The most likely culprit for why the lid did not shine is that the silver is worn away. The piece is probably silver plate and for whatever reason (handling, washing, etc.) the lid lost its silver while the bottom retained more. You can see in your before photos that they really didn't start out the same color which is a good sign that wear has played its hand.Enjoy your find.
ReplyDeleteIt is really stunning in the after shot.
ReplyDeleteYou did good! I love "shiny silver". I guess I am too old to get in on this wave. Your purchase turned out great. I can see a beautiful arrangement of white roses in it. Just my imagination going wild. LOL.
ReplyDeleteSometimes excess heat will have that effect on silverplate. Perhaps it was accidentally placed over a warm burner.
You still scored big time. Hugs, Ginger
It looks like it might be a brass that had been silverplated. The other thing that could have happened is that someone could have used it for a cooking lid (over boiling hot food) which could alter the color. I had that happen on one of my pieces once. Whatever it is-it is beautiful! You can always spray paint the little sucker!;>) Hugs-Diana
ReplyDeleteI think Ginger might be right about the heat getting to the lid:( It's still a real super duper deal and I'm looking forward to seeing how you use it in Christmas decor. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Linda
so pretty! what a great find.
ReplyDeleteIt is gorgeous. I love it. Such a pretty shape and style. Fabulous price. Hugs, Marty
ReplyDeleteYou got a great deal. The top must be made out of a different metal.
ReplyDeleteEven with the duller lid it's still a prize of a piece. I'd be looking forward to that Christmas project :).
ReplyDeleteGreat find....I love the little feet! I like when silver has a nice shine. :)
ReplyDeleteNice find!! I love to find old silver and polish it up!!

ReplyDeleteOMG... $1.91!..
ReplyDeleteWhat a great piece! Looks like the silverplate is worn from the lid.
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful, what do you think it would cost to have the lid replated? Great buy, I wish we has some thrift stores around my home! Have a great Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful piece, even without a shiny lid. And the $1.91 price tag is amazing. Have a great Thanksgiving.
ReplyDeleteAmazing find.. can't believe the price! Funny about the top--but it still is an amazing piece. I have never found one at such a great price. It really shined up nicely, too. I'm your newest follower!
