Barn Sale in Ohio

On Thursday I told you that I was going to have a busy day on Friday with a barn sale and some church rummage sales. I was so pumped up about all the possible thrifty finds out there just waiting for me.

BTW, I originally wrote this as one extremely long post and decided to break it up into two days worth. You'll thank me for that.

So today, let's start with the barn sale:

It was at French Hen Farm in Marysville, Ohio which is about 45 minutes from where I live. Pop on over to her blog HERE to see some photos of the displays she has. You won't regret it. I'll wait until you get back...

...see, wasn't that worth it! Very cute set up and displays. And oodles of cool one of a kind stuff.

This is the second of her sales that I have been to and they always draw quite a crowd. A very, very large crowd. That would be my only negative thought of the sale is that it is really, really packed, but you can't blame them for being successful.

Really, they have some of the coolest items for sale and the stuff gets snatched up quickly. So if you see it, you'd better take it. While standing in line to check out, I kept seeing people in front of me holding my stuff. Stuff I would have bought if I had gotten there earlier, but sadly Tim Horton's was calling my name and caused me to be later than I expected to be. Curse those Timbits!

Here's my haul from the barn sale (chair not included, just for display). Can I add that the haul would have been a heck of a lot larger, but I had high hopes for the remainder of my shopping day, so I didn't want to put all my eggs in one basket so to say (a little chicken farm humor).

I spied this tin and had to have it. It will be awesome to use in my office for storage. I'm always on the lookout for weird items to store stuff in.

It has a great slightly rusty patina to it.

I also bought this cute little metal flower frog. The postcard is from my vintage postcard stash.

Tip - don't put a metal flower frog in the bottom of a basket and cover it with other things and then forget about it and end up with metal prongs under your fingernails. Not that that is what happened to me or anything.

I also bought this vintage ticking fabric.

It was rolled up like this when I bought it and, like I mentioned previously, you need to grab things when you see them at the barn sale, so I didn't have time to unroll it and inspect it prior to buying it.

Dumb move. When I got it home and unrolled it, I found that quite a bit of it was unusable. Unless you go for the holey, ripped look.

I may still be able to make some very small pillows out of it. Very small.

But since I had bought the fabric to make some pillows for my Adirondack chairs, I'll end up running to JoAnn fabrics for some new ticking fabric for that project. You live and you learn and next time I will unroll.

Tomorrow I'll show you the loot from the church sales.

Linking with Linda at Coastal Charm for her Nifty Thrifty Tuesday get-together and Rhoda at Southern Hospitality for her Thrift Share Monday.

Edited to add: Linda from French Hen Farm left a very nice comment apologizing for the fabric problem. It was very sweet of her to stop by!

  1. Hi Pam, I've been caught out with things like that before - you live and learn. Regarding the ticking, I like the look of it folded in a wire basket. I recently bought some nice fabrics so I could just have them folded and stacked in a wire basket in my craft room for display. I love flower frogs.

  3. What a bummer about the ticking fabric. That just doesn't seem right to me. But your tin sure is nice...I just love the green patina.

  4. I appreciate your chicken farm humor. You made my day (which was already a pretty awesome one). Thank you for showing me the French Hen farm blog. I think I'm going to enjoy reading their antics as much as I enjoy reading yours. Good luck with your pillow making.

  6. I'm ready to add that ticking fabric to my next collage! lol I am bummed you can't make pillows out of it. Still cringing at the thought of that hidden flower frog. Yikes. Love the tin!

  7. Love that green color on the tin.I so wanted to go to the sale but couldn't really justify using that much gas to head to a sale when I'm having my own next weekend.I'm supposed to be getting rid of - not accumulating more!Ha!As if that will ever really happen...Enjoy your finds.

  8. That's too bad about the ticking...I wouldn't have been too happy about that. LOVE the flower frog :)

  9. Looks like a nice haul! Too bad about that fabric, personally I think that was rather dishonest . . . maybe you could use the ticking on the front and a solid on the back. I enjoyed my visit!

  10. Too bad about the fabric, they should have put "as is- holes" on the price tag. Love your tin!

  11. Drats on the fabric, but score on the tin and flower frog! Great color and patina on the vintage tin! Love pieces like that for stacking. :)

  12. Nice finds, except for the ticking fabric. Personally, I think it is pretty lousy for a seller to roll it up so "nicely" and then for the buyer to discover the holes afer they get home... very deceptive in my opinion. And you know what I like? The CHAIR that you have everything displayed upon! Love it/love the color!
    Best,

  14. Hi. I am so sorry about the flawed fabric. It was part of a big lot of fabric that was purchased at an auction. It was the only one left from last sale (that is probably why). We would never intentionally hide flaws. We sell old things. Some are more flawed than others. :(
I would like to refund your money or send you a gift card to someplace you like.
Please let me know which you would like
Again please accept our apologies and I hope you will visit us again!
    Regards
    Linda

  15. Yowch! Forgetting about something spiky at the bottom of a basket is just the kind of thing I'd do. I've learnt a new word though - had no idea they were called frogs :-)

  16. Love your tin! The patina is so cool. I have relatives in Ohio and they have told me that I would be in heaven at those kind of sales. We really don't have anything like it in Utah. Maybe someday I will make it there to treasure hunt. Enjoy those finds! Thanks for visiting my blog and for your comment.

  17. Well, I love your tin! That fabric should have been rolled the other way OR at the very least marked AS IS so that you would know there was SOMETHING wrong with it! I hate when sellers do that! I avoid them like the plague if they decieve me~ Flower frog that bites? OUCH!!!! xxoo Diana

  18. Oh- I see where the lady (Linda) that had the sale popped in to offer apologies! Good for her-Not knowing is certainly a lot different than concealing something on purpose! I'd say she is a pretty good sport about it and I would definitely visit her again!

See...I KNEW there were good people in the world! xxoo Diana

  19. fantastic finds! Can't wait to see the rest.

  20. First of all, it was bad and wrong for the seller to 'hide' the flaws of the fabric from view. Second, I have made the same mistakes and learned from them. Happens to the best of us.

  21. Love the color on that tin, and the frog is great! That was kind of deceptive of the person to roll up the fabric and cover the holes - just not honest. Linda

  22. I love the tin you purchased. I would have purchased it also. Yes, I know what you mean about the sale. Great stuff from what I can see on my end. I can't wait to see what you bought at the church sale.

  23. That's too bad about the fabric...try to use what you can I suppose. Love that tin, cool color Pam! Good eye...

  24. Pam, if it is any consolation I buy things, in a hurry, and they are damaged all the time. I bought a huge beveled mirror Saturday and Joe noticed the corner was damaged. I must quit chatting with people and really examine stuff! The storage tin has great patina. ♥O

  25. It didn't take long to remember the frog once you "found" it with your fingertips, did it.

    Great tin!

  26. Great finds(even with the fabric)!!! You have a great eye Pam, and I bet you will still do something awesome with the fabric:)

  27. Great finds! I love using tins like yours for storage all over my home. I'd have bought that and the flower frog in a hearbeat.

  29. I am looking forward to my first sale of this type next weekend. I hope I am able to take lots of pictures to share. I want to experience one in person since I love seeing them through other bloggers. Maybe someday I would love to organize one too.

I am sure the fabric was an oversight and not an attempt to hide flaws. Still, it is a good reminder and lesson to us. We have all had similar experiences.
