Sullivan & Murphy's Porch Sale

On Memorial Day weekend I went to Sue of Sullivan and Murphy's Vintage Porch Sale held at The Peddler's House in Waynesville, Ohio.

She had loads of silver. Can you believe I did not buy one single piece of her silver. I must have been overcome by the heat that day.

She had this really pretty and HUGE soup tureen,

picnic baskets, bird cages,

suitcases and wall hanger thingies (my official name for them)

And a really cute camp stool with vintage binoculars displayed on it.

I did not buy the camp stool that day, but mentioned to Sue that I had thought about it all the way home. And do you know what? Even though someone had bought the stool later that day, she found another one for me this weekend. Wasn't that sweet of her!

I did buy this vintage leather suitcase from her that was exactly what I was looking for. It goes so well with my wicker look suitcase below it. I need one more to make an official collection.

I also purchased this collapsible wire mesh thing which is either an egg carrier or something that went in a bait pail?

And last, but not least, I bought this white painted thingiemado whatchamacallit.

I put it in my bowl of door hardware, but really have no idea in the world what it is.

It looks like this on the top

and it may be tortoise colored marble under the paint.

Anyone know what it is?

And yes, I occasionally buy things that I do not know what they are just because they are cool. Doesn't everyone?

  3. Pam- Once again, I'm so glad that you were able to drive down to my sale! That's a true bloggy friend. I was fascinated by that crazy metal screwy thing and am glad that it found a good home with some other metal junque. I'll bring the camp stool along w/me next time we meet. Hopefully, it will be soon. Summer goes by so quickly and I know we all get so busy, but I'm hoping in July we can all meet up once again. There's a great sale I'm going to in Indiana the middle of July. I'll post about it soon. Glad you like all my great junque. I sold the rest of my suitcases yesterday. woo hoo! I still can't park in the garage- I'm debating if I will try selling the left-overs at a yard sale. We'll see.....

  4. Oh Pam, this is not a thingiemado whatchamacallit. It is clearly a vintage thingamajig.

I'm glad you found some goodies to bring home.

  8. We always called them resistors, like on the top of old telephone poles. The one you got was made to screw into the side of your house. The electric wire came down from the pole and went through it before going on down to your fuse box. Lots of them were a heavy gauge porcelain to be non-conducting and stay cool, that's what yours looks like. I'm no expert, there's probably a more accurate name for them. My house had them when we moved here, it was built in the 1920's.

  9. I think Annie has the winning answer there! I think that wire basket thingy is one to turn upside down and put your veggies in them in the sink to wash them...at least that's what I THINK it is ...but then I am old and may not be thinking clearly at all!

Love your old suitcase. I'd say you had a pretty good day of it! xo Diana

  13. Love your suitcase and the wicker on under it. The knob thingie is fabulous also. I am with you, have no idea what it is, but it is fabulous. You did great and so glad she found you a stool. Thanks also for your comments on the lamps. I was so surprised at the change. Hugs, Marty

  15. I love the binoculars (one of my collections, and I'm not counting or admitting the number). I'm glad Annie had an answer. I learned something new. I love your suitcases too. I have just one so far but think I will stop at three when I find the other two perfect ones.

  19. WOW! Great finds at Sue's! Wish I lived closer! The mystery piece has something to do with electricity...wire ran through the hold, and I think I recall them on the side of a house, usually near the roof or on a pole. So it's an electrical thingy...that's the technical term for it. HA! It is BEAUTIFUL! Looks like you had lots of fun! Vicki

  20. Pam- just popped over to say that my thingamajiggy is definitely a resistor. I found another one of them tonight up in Troy at a garden/vintage show. It stormed like crazy and I had no umbrella- I was rather wet! Good thing I didn't get zapped- we were out on a farm standing under a grove of trees. :-)

  23. I love the luggage! And I have one of those collapsible wire mesh things with the red handles, too. It's hard to display, because it always falls down. Have no idea what it is!
