The Lantern With No Candle

Although I wasn't sure I was going to be keeping this lantern when I first bought it, because it's HUGE and a little out of scale for the room, I have kept it on the dining room table pretty much non-stop since March and have come to love it. I just keep altering the poor thing for each season.

It's been a bird's home, a patriotic lantern Paul Revere would have been proud to carry (You know he did more than just make cookware, didn't you?) and I've occasionally even used it as a boring old candle holder.

For Fall, I threw a white pumpkin into it, wrapped some acorn garland that I have had forever and a day around it,

tossed some stained gourds on the table,

popped in a vocabulary card and called it a day.

The vocabulary card would have made so much more sense if it had said ACORN wouldn't it? Oh well, LEAF still says Fall and it makes much more sense than the COW card I have.

On another note, my son seems to be doing better today. We ended up taking him to the ER Monday night for a few hours because his kidney stone pain kept getting worse and worse, but the stones seem to have settled down and his pneumonia/cold is much better also. So I think he's finally on the mend now. I'm off to knock on some wood now, because now that I've said that, I've probably just jinxed it.

  1. We have a couple of lanterns like that on our mantle. Much smaller; they would never hold a pumpkin. One holds the catnip, however. One of our cats can get anything he wants from anywhere we put it. But without opposable thumbs he will never get the catnip. He can only sit on the mantle, stare into the lantern, and wait for one of his people to open it.

I do hope your son is mighty fine soon. It's just awful when the little ones are down.

  2. Pam.. I love your lantern, and the way that you decorate it!
I almost bought one like that a few weeks ago.
It's hard for me to pass up a cute lantern :)

Glad to hear that your son is improving... sad about having to rush him to the E.R. though.
Sending my best 'get well soon' wishes.

  6. I am so glad Max is finally better. Sometimes IV pain meds are the only thing that will settle that pain down even for a short time. The lantern is very fetching for fall with it's pumpkin. xo, olive

  7. It is good to hear that your son is doing better. I love your big lantern. It seems kind of "cloche-ish" to me. It's cool that it's big enough that you can display different seasonal things in it throughout the year, or even use it as a candle lantern. I thought that the pear shaped gourd was a pear at first. Love the shapes on those two gourds and went back to see your gourd cleaning and staining finish tutorial. If I find some dried gourds to buy, I might just give it a try. Really liking the way they look.

  10. I have things like that in my house too -- things I sorta regretted buying, but ended up using a lot. It sure does look great for the season.

Glad to hear that your son's feeling better. I know from (my husband's) experience that stones can be very painful. My husband was in agony! I hope he is all better soon!

  13. Definitely love the flash card with the lantern. It's fabulous with each season's makeover. Knowing how much my husband suffers with his kidney stones, I can't even imagine how hard it must be on your son. Enough already. I hope the worst is over. HUGS!!

  20. Aren't you glad you kept the lantern, after all? It's the perfect table centerpiece which I think is one of the hardest things to find. Your card can be kept in place for Thanksgiving, too. EA as in "eat".

I'm knocking on wood for you, too. And you know I have plenty of unpainted wood finishes to knock on!
