Kitchen Tour

The final part of the tour is the kitchen area. Because let's face it, I'll never have my bedrooms or bathroom clean enough to be photographed. Just not happening.

And while we're at it, let's talk about cleanliness. I hope you realize that I super duper cleaned and organized my house before taking photos. Just for a typical dinner party, you'll find me cleaning the rubber seals in the dishwasher with a toothbrush and vacuuming behind the refrigerator (people look back there you know). So there was no way I was going to invite 10 billion people on the internet into my home and not clean it up. Just saying.

Wait, my husband just notified me that there's not 10 billion people on the planet? Oh well, the point is that whenever you see photos of people's houses on blogs, you can pretty much count on the fact that there's been some cleaning and fluffing going on.

So on to the tour. The kitchen and kitchen dining area are right off the living room. You can stand on the other side of this breakfast counter and look straight back into the living room.

And since the rooms adjoin each other, we have the obligatory dog in the kitchen. When he's not staring longingly off into space, he works as a bottle opener.

Yes, I have wooden cabinets.

Yes, I understand that it is not a popular look on blogs.

I have steered clear of the painting-your-kitchen-cabinets-white blog trend, because honestly, I like my cabinets and they are still in excellent shape. I just can't personally see me painting them. Just being honest. I know that a lot of people love the painted cabinet look and I do too, but just in other people's houses.

I'm addicted to putting stuff on top of my cabinets. I don't know what I'd do if we had a soffit up there.

I mean, where would I keep my croquet box?

Or rusty scale?

This round wooden table is from my Mother's kitchen and the black chairs were ridiculously cheap from the Penney's Outlet.

Everyone thought I was nuts for buying chairs that didn't match the style of the table, but I like the look of mismatched chairs. Like the set was multi-generational. Which it is.

I hope you enjoyed the tour of the house. I'll be back this weekend with some Christmas posts, because rumor has it that the holidays are just around the corner.

  1. I love the look of white cabinets, but ours are wood, too. The wood is warm and, let's face it, if you don't paint your cabinets, you don't have to repaint them! I like your kitchen very much.

  2. My cabinets are wood as well and I long for white cabinets because I have such a small kitchen in a shaddy house. But I don't know if white cabinets will ever happen. C'est la vie!

Your kitchen is darling. I love the mismatched chairs and the fiesta ware above the cabinets.

  3. I have wooden cabinets and they are old. They are not pretty like yours but I like the warmth of them. A while back I changed the hardware..
I heard from Polly that you were at her shop. How cute it was. I didn't take a pic of the cookies....did you. Lots of others that I will post. Are you going next Friday. Not excited about it being at night.

  5. Pam, I love the table and chairs. I hear you about the cabinets. The yellow house came with white ones and while I appreciate the look I cannot keep them clean. Drives me craziER. Love your collections on top of the cabinets (I have a soffit ugh). You are awesome for doing all that cleaning. I am at our dirty old house and really should get up and clean something. Anything. hugs, olive

P.S. am going to throw sticks to Shelley instead of cleaning

  7. Perfectly clean can be overrated. And time consuming. ;-)

I love the mismatched look, especially for tables and chairs. I also love when there are multiple styles of chairs. Mix, mix, mix!

  8. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I have (almost) exactly the same kitchen cabinets - and I LOVE how yours look with the dark countertops & appliances! I've been wondering how that would look - now I know what we're doing to our kitchen! Seriously - thank you!
I, too, love your mismatched table & chairs - and, how'd you steal the porcelain-top cabinet from my basement? I swear I saw it down there just yesterday! Again - thank you for the decorating idea as I've been wanting it upstairs, somewhere.
My kitchen, sadly, has soffits. Hate 'em. A LOT. What WAS I thinking???
Thank you for sharing your home with us all!

  9. Our kitchen has the same cabinets, except maple. The soffit area is more little doors with glass fronts and thet's where the pottery goes. Your fiesta pitchers would look nice in our kitchen!

  10. I wish our cabinets had space on top for collections. Your mismatched chairs are perfect with that table. I seriously think I want to do the same thing when we finally replace our dining room set. Great tour, Pam.

  11. I used to have cabinets with space on top to put stuff like you do, I sure miss it. In my house now I have soffits. Of course I don't have to dust, but I sure love the look of it and yours is very pretty. I too have natural oak cabinets. I just painted the island black and love the look of that against the oak. I love your chairs and table. Wish I could do that, but I am stuck with a huge table that was outragously expensive (before blogging and DIY) so I will die with it. Thanks for sharing.

  12. I am so glad that you invited us on a tour...now I love how you put the table and chairs as a set (instant charm).

    Blessings,

  13. I love the look of the painted cabinets-so pretty-but I love my wooden cabinets. It just seems warmer and more natural for me-everytime I see pretty painted ones
I want to do it but I know I never will. Love the mismatched chairs, it makes it more interesting.

  15. We collect a lot of the same stuff. I love bowls. The croquet box is awesome. I love the mismatched table and chairs (I do that too). The windows in the dining area make it so light and bright.

  16. First off, I love your Fiesta Ware pitchers!! My cabinets are the same as yours, and I've often pondered the idea of painting them white. In my case, however, I just hate the thought of going to all that work for something that may turn out to be very dated in a few years.

I love your dining alcove, and the mismatched chairs give it charm. Nice tour!

  17. I'm quite happy with wooden cabinets too, no paint for me!!

I use the top for decorating too, I'd be lost without that space!

  18. I have white cabinets, but they are such a pain to keep clean, especially with kids and grandkids running around. The old house we used to live in had a soffit around the cabinets and I ripped it out. Had to do some patching but I loved it after it was all said and done.

  19. I wish I still had space above my cabinets. But that was another house. I love your Fiesta pitchers. Just think of it this way: soon as you paint the cabinets, the wood look will be back in vogue.

  20. I agree with the leave-your-wood-cabinets alone comments. I have a nasty vice of painting anything w/in reach, but you do spend the rest of your life touching up or repainting. Not as much fun for some reason. Really like your above-cabinets displays.

  21. I love your cabinets! Mine are wood also but I do have a soffit and I hate it! I want to put things up there! I love the mismatched table and chairs, mine is like that also! Very nice and CLEAN kitchen :) hugs, Linda

  22. I envy your soffit-less kitchen. I hate the lack of over cabinet storage in our kitchen. It means I use valuable counter space for things like rusty scales.

I also love the mismatched chairs - we did the same thing when we bought our new table several years ago and hubby thought I was out of my mind when I explained exactly what I wanted.... it's still not exactly what I wanted though b/c in my dream kitchen the mismatched chairs were all different bright colors. Sigh - someday.....

  23. I love all of your collections on top of your cabinets! I'm stuck with a soffit because we've got steam pipes and wiring hiding in it, so the only thing I can display is plates. And mismatched is the way to go for tables and chairs! I don't even have 2 matching chairs! Your kitchen is lovely with your warm wood cabinets. I think I'll stay for a while in your nice clean organized house before I head back to the construction zone I'm calling home these days. I do appreciate all the fluffing and dusting you did to prepare for your bloggy company. :@

  24. I love your wooden cabinets!!! The rich colors of your ceramic pitchers and mixing bowls look better with stained cabinets. That croquet box is sooo interesting!!!

  25. I'm with you on the wooden cabinets. Your kitchen is so inviting, like it's be a great place to just park it and chat. Thanks for the tour.

  27. Girl, ain't nothing wrong with those chairs or your cabinets. I have two different style chairs at the same table and I love it. I also have wooden cabinets...I've threatened to paint them, but well, you know? I do wish I could put things on top of mine. Everything is very nice...and clean.:-)
Going to an estate sale tomorrow...wooooOOOhoooOOo!
