Retro Cocktail Shaker With Bakelite Handle

Published by Pam Kessler | 248 words. · About 2 minutes to read this article. -

I had not been to the thrift store for a long, long time. Generally, in the summer I concentrate on garage sales and in the winter I get my fix at the thrift stores. But garage sales are slowing down around here, so off to the local thrift store I went.

I saw this sitting on the top shelf in the brass section (even though it was just dirty, not brass) and I was drawn to it. Maybe it was the whole being "misidentified by outer appearances" thing that drew me in.

Or maybe because of this handle. OK, it was because of the handle. It looks like it's Bakelite.

It has this weird pour spout. The cap on the spout unscrews and the spout has a strainer type thing in it.

So the question is: Would you buy something that you have no idea what it is, based on the fact that it may have a Bakelite handle?

Is this normal thrift store behavior? Or is this the start of my life as a hoarder?

FYI - after bringing it home and Googling it, I found that it is a cocktail shaker. Haven't made a cocktail in many years. Correction - have not made a cocktail that needed a shaker EVER. (And I was a bartender at one point - not a lot of college students were drinking martinis in those days).

If I told you it was only 90 cents, would you have bought it then?

Bakelite = Buy. I currently have two bakelite view masters because...they are Bakelite (although I am supposed to sell them). Now Bakelite at $0.90 is a no brainer!Enjoy and head out to hunt some more.

Yes, I would have bought it, especially since it has a bakelite handle! Hoarders? From the looks of the photos around blogland, I don't think we have gotten to that stage yet!

I hope you will bring one of your projects to my first Potpourri Friday Party this week - Friday, September 2. Link-up starts on Thursday afternoon. Without a doubt, your participation will help make the party better!

This is so unique and I just love that red handle!!!! Nothing at my Goodwill is ever that inexpensive! Congrats on a great find! Sandy

It kind of looks like a thermos with a handle and spout. I would've never guessed it was for cocktails. At that price I would've wanted to get it too 🙂

I so would have bought that, since I already have one like it, but with a metal handle, so I knew what it was right away. How can you beat the price and I have an affinity for anything old and unique. I have to learn how to sell on line because my house looks like a thrift store. A nice thrift store, full of unique items.

Yep I definitely would have bought it and then used that as an excuse to host a girls night and make lemon drop martinis! Great find!

To both questions yes. If I had not started consigning some of my things and then buying things to sell I do not wish to know what would have become of me. Yard sales here are getting thin and yucky too.
