How To Keep Birds From Nesting In Unwanted Places

Published by Pam Kessler | 198 words. · About 1 minute to read this article. -

Is pansylicious a word? It should be.

    Spring pansies.

I know, I know. We haven't exactly passed the spring equinox or St Patrick's Day yet, but they were selling them at Home Depot. So, I figure if they are selling them, I will buy them.
I ran home, potted them up and put them in my iron hanging planter on my front porch.

    Pansies in flower pots.

I know that pansies come in all sorts of colors, but I tend to stick with the light blue and bright yellow.

    Yellow and blue pansies.

I always think I'll venture outside my comfort zone and pick a burgundy or something wild and crazy like that. But I always come home with the blues and yellows. They just shout spring to me.

Does anyone else need to stick forks in your plants, so the birds don't make nests in them?

    Fork in pansies.

I spent the better part of the summer last year with bird poop running down the wall beside my front door, because they insisted on making a nest in this planter. Did you know that baby birds don't leave the nest to do their dirty work?

Decided to nip it in the bud this year. Or poke them in the butt.

Pretty pansies. COLORFUL. Like the yellow ones. Love the fork idea. My mom can't put a wreath on her door because all the birds make nests in it? Drives her crazy. Take care.

I love your planter and the pansies you planted are my favorite colors! My pansies are looking pretty good this week, too. They have moved on to summer flowers at our local home store. They still have pansies, but the annuals are on their way....guess the hot weather will be here soon, too.

Love your pansies and your fork idea. Hope it does nip your bird problem. Last year some hooligan creatures kept yanking my plants out of the pots. I had the bright idea to make a poultice out of Tiger Balm and Vicks (the axle grease kind) and put it just around the edge on the flower pots. The poultice kept the plants in the pot and the animals out. It was working great, but within two and a half weeks apparently the fumes from my anti-critter poultice killed off my plants. My once beautiful plants looked like something from the Adams family front porch. This year I'll booby trap my plants with forks instead. Thanks for the idea.

Loving those pansies. I always pick the blue ones too, but I like the pale yellow ones and I like the white ones mixed in, too. LOVE them. Great idea with the forks. We had a nest by our side door last year and it just about ruined the siding...but it was sooooo cute I didn't mind. xo Diana

What a great idea--using the fork. I've used forks for holding plants up but not this. I WILL remember this though.

I will have to remember the forks.

I can't wait to plant pansies. We've never had to add forks...interesting way to keep birds away. Brilliant actually.

Give me pansies of any color, I love them all.
What a great idea with the forks. Going to try it here hoping to keep the kitties out of the pots.

The flowers are beautiful! Never knew about the fork! Great tip! I am with Sally, the birds destroyed my wreath also last year! LOL

What a hoot! That is so funny, sticking a fork in the pots, "butt" if it works... and color coordinated too!

Did you ever go "forking" when you were a teenager? We would go buy a couple hundred plastic forks and when it was cool at night we would go "fork" someone's front yard.(stab them into the ground) If it froze in the night, they had an extra hard time getting them out of their yards!

This may be the best tip ever, Pam! Now, if I can just figure out a way to make an attractive wreath out of forks to hang on my front porch - LOL. The birds like to build nests there, and totally ruined a wreath last year!
