Thrifting In H E Double Toothpicks

Published by Pam Kessler | 325 words. · About 2 minutes to read this article. -

Today is a scorcher. Hot enough that only a fool would be out garage sale-ing today.

But I took one for the team and went ahead and went out for a few minutes this morning.

Side note - Tim Hortons' sour cream glazed donuts don't do well in a hot car for very long. Yes, learned that one the hard way. Add them to the list of things not to lock up in your car on a hot day.

I did find a few things that sort of, maybe, made all the sweat worthwhile though.

    Yard sale finds.

I found a bushel basket that is taller than it is wide, so I'm not sure if it's really a bushel basket, but let's just call it that.

    Tall bushel basket.

This is going to make an appearance on my fall front porch in a few months. Last year, I searched high and low for one this shape, so when I saw one at a garage sale, I jumped on it. Or sweated on it.

I found two Carol Brady-ish yellow daisy pillowcases with hand-crocheted trimming on them.

Vintage daisy pillowcase with crocheted trim.

There is nothing like laying your head down on a crisp pillowcase on a hot night. They just don't make them like they used to (do I sound like I'm 90 years old?).

I bought the suitcase thinking it was just a great box. Thinking that maybe it used to hold a piece of office equipment or something weird. It was only a dollar, so I just grabbed it. No sniff test or anything.

When I got home and opened it, I was surprised to see this girlie lining in it.

    Vintage suitcase with floral lining.

It's a little dirty on the inside, but it does not smell, so I will use it along with my other suitcases to keep myself from looking like a hoarder.

    Lining in a vintage suitcase.

Did you brave the heat today in the interest of saving all things vintage?

And where do I apply for my official fool certificate?

Cute finds. Love all of them. I haven't yard-saled in a while. But the thrift stores and consignment shops around here have taken my money. 🙂 Have a great weekend!

You brave, brave girl! I love your basket- I have seen them a few times here and there and never picked one up. Now I wish I had. I love good old pillowcases, too...especially on hot sticky nights. Hope you have a wonderful weekend- xo Diana

Your suitcase is darling! I've been eyeing baskets like that--a woman at the local flea market sells them as "French orchard baskets" for $29!--great score even worth sweating for😉. It was so pickin HOT here in IL, I didn't even attempt going to several big sales....maybe tomorrow

I'm smiling at your Carol Brady pillow case reference. They are fabulous. The lining in that suitcase is simply divine. You did good. It was definitely worth the sweat. While I was at work, my husband hit two estate sales and scored some vintage Halloween. I'm a happy lady!

That is a green bean basket. It is tall and narrow because the weight of the green beans won't hurt the one underneath like it would if you put peaches or tomatoes in it. Also, You can hold it in one arm and pick with the other hand. I'm no farmer, but I am the daughter of a produce man.

Oh, you are brave. There has been a sale going on for 2 days at the end of our block, but it's so hot and humid I wasn't even tempted to go. You found a wonderful basket and the suitcase is so pretty inside! Yes, I think it was worth your time.

Ooh, love all your pretty goodies, especially that basket. No fool certificates being given out for hunting down good stuff. I braved it later in the morning and am patting myself on the back:-)

Really like all your items. I went last week when it was hotter than you know what here. Got some great finds will I will do a post on. I really like that basket and yes your right it will look great for fall. I am getting anxious to decorate for fall. I'm tired of all this heat and we are only 1/2 way through summer.
Stay cool and have a big glass of ice tea.
