Nothing says 4th Of July like Cracker Jacks and flags. OK, maybe fireworks, parades and picnics. But Cracker Jacks and flags are pretty high up there!
So let's do some Cracker Jack trivia for the 4th Of July:
- Did you know that Cracker Jacks has been around since 1896.
- The sailor's name is Sailor Jack and the dog's name is Bingo.
- In 1908 it was included in the famous "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" song and is now pretty much a part of going to a baseball park.
- There are NO MORE TOYS inside the freakin' boxes, they replaced them with a stupid QR code you can scan and it sends you to an online baseball game or other such nonsense. What the h-e-double-toothpicks!!!
In other scandalous 4th of July news, I took a poll on my facebook page on which of these flag holders was liked more. What do you think?

BTW, I put a small piece of styrofoam in the bottom of the crock and jabbed the flags into it so they would stand up straight. Otherwise they flopped over the the side.
And that 4th of July mason jar flag thingie up above in the crock photo? It is so simple I never even thought to do a whole tutorial on it.
- It is just a blue mason jar I had setting around the house. A typical clear one would work also.
- I used one of those inexpensive little 4x6 flags on a wooden stick (the ones they normally sell with 4-6 in a bag for $1.99).
- And removed the flag from the stick.
- Then attached the flag to the mason jar with a thin rubber band.
Nothing permanent and it only took about 2 minutes to make. If you wanted to make it more permanent you could Mod Podge it onto the jar.
Sometimes simple is the way to go!
That's all I've got for you on this lazy 4th of July morning.
We're going to a parade today (if it doesn't rain) and a picnic (if it doesn't rain) and fireworks (if it doesn't rain). Pretty much a typical 4th of July here at the House Of Hawthornes (if it doesn't rain).
Can you tell RAIN is pretty much in the forecast here?

No toys in the Cracker Jack boxes? I don't eat it so I'm just now learning this awful news! Just goes to show how the world is possibly, really, in all likelihood going to H-E-double L in a handbasket! It's the little things that count, you know. HOW disappointing for the children. Of course they still have the cheap, easily breakable prizes they get in their McDonald's kids' meals. Anyway, on a more positive note, nice red, white, and blue styling and hope your 4th was fun!

P.S. Can't believe Cracker Jacks don't have a toy surprise inside anymore! WHAT? Once upon a time, 20 plus years ago, my now husband, then boyfriend, had come by with several boxes. Mine had a special surprise. Keith had taken a razor blade, cut the bottom of the box very carefully, removed the paper package inside, and replaced the toy with a sweet angel and heart ring, with a tiny little diamond chip in the heart. Put it all back together again, so well that I had no clue. Ah romance. . . If only men would continue to court. Sigh.

Thanks for a sweet memory close to my heart, Pam! My mom ALWAYS, ALWAYS said H E double toothpicks. The closest she ever got to swearing was in her later years, when she would quietly comment 'Kiss my a**', under her breath. HA! She did have a colorful collection of Ukrainian phrases, most of which I am sure were not complimentary. I love all your displays, all things red, white and blue! I had the exact same cracker jack tin, but passed it on. What WAS I thinking??? Up here in MN, we did take in a parade, had picnic foods at home, and then I spent the evening with my daughter's kitten, trying to keep him from spending the night under the commode. A beautiful fireworks display, right outside her window, the bombs bursting in air. SO LOUD! Sawyer did very well, actually!

Each one is festive but I lean towards the thermos. However I love the straws of stars and stripes, where did you get these festive straws from? I don't think I have seen those and I like how nicely they went with the display.
Also while we went on a weekend getaway this week, we stopped in an antique store and she had a 4th of July display counter and she also grouped tins together of red, white and blue no matter what subject they had written on them as it was all about the color and looked really cute. My favorite were her red sparkly star napkin ring holders and......A red plastic Koolaid pitcher with the 4 matching cups!!! Now I have the clear Koolaid guy pitcher which I hardly use but like his smiling face but I was almost tempted to buy the red Kool aid one with the matching cups as I never saw the Koolaid cups and didn't know they made red Koolaid pitchers, I only saw the clear/ white plastic ones. Anyway, Pam you once again did an awesome display of Patriotism.

Cracker Jacks....I totally agree with you, except...by the time we came along those toys were those super cheap ones made in China and when that big push to avoid lead products from there came through...wasn't that about the time they switched out? Not saying they couldn't have come up with some alternative without resorting to a total bust as far as I'm concerned with those codes...especially since such a large portion of their target wouldn't be online....only the more wealthy.
and...speaking of the Woolite and other red/white/blue...it was the salt and pepper shakers that made me go...whaaa??? and then..oh yeah...red and white...plus, you'd need them on that picnic!! it's all good!!

Love the flags in the vintage thermos. I am with you on them changing the toy in the cracker jacks too. I guess they have to keep up with the changing times!!!! Loved eating those as a kid and making my way down in the box to see what toy I was going to get. Happy 4th.

I was so upset when I bought some for my son's baseball team. I thought the kids would get a kick out of getting the toy and all it was was a piece of cardboard with a code on it! He plays on a team with all special needs kiddos and not a one of them has a cellphone 🙁
