    My Flowery Thrifty Finds

Published by Pam Kessler | 363 words. · About 2 minutes to read this article. -

I had a very frustrating garage sale weekend. I don't know if it was my mood, the garage sales I picked or just the weather, but I just couldn't get a groove going.

Everything was overpriced. $30.00 for a silver plated champagne bucket? $120.00 for a wicker planter box? Are you serious? Is this an antique store or a garage sale?

    So no wooden folding chairs,

    no vintage fans

and no Coke cases for me this week.

Nope, my big garage sale find was a pillow.

A cute pillow for $2.00, but a pillow for gosh sake!

Now, my redeeming thing is that I went to the Volunteers of America store and found a few items.

An urn that was originally bought at Michael's (still had the $16.99 price tag on the bottom). I bought it for $2.92.

    A china platter for $1.91

that has this really pretty rose design with a shadow design behind the roses.

It was made by Universal in Cambridge, Ohio. The pattern is called Moss Rose and is from the 1950's.

I have found conflicting research online that either states it was made for Sears, Roebuck or was given away as premiums at grocery stores and movie theaters. It is a very pretty design either way.

I also found this tin flower holder with cream roses included for $1.91. I really bought it for the tin vase, but the flowers are growing on me.

And what is with Volunteers of America's pricing? Why $1.91? Why not just say $1.99 or $2.00? And no it doesn't come out an even number with tax added - it would be $2.04 with tax.

Look what I did when I got it home. Yes - I pulled out the chalkboard paint! I love that stuff.

So, if fleurs is not the plural of fluer I can just erase the s. I took Spanish in High School, so not sure how the French words work. Who am I kidding, I have no idea how the Spanish words work either.

I hope you all had better garage sale experiences than I did, but at least I got a little thrift store action in.

We don't have a VOA here. It sounds as if it has better prices than the GW or SA here. They think they are retail stores. LOL You did pretty well- like that urn a lot. Hope all is going well with you. Can't wait for fall- I am so tired of all the heat and humidity. Have you ever been to the Springfield Extravaganza? Lots of neat things-

P.S. Sometimes garage sales are a bust, and sometimes a bonanza! We always have hopes of the "bonanza"! (and, thanks for stopping by my blog!)

      Pam,
At least you went to garage sales Saturday. I never made it out the front door. It was HOT and not many sales were advertised in my area. This was tax-free week-end in Texas, so everyone was shopping for school clothes and supplies. Actually, it felt good not to leave the house for a day.

Some sales are tougher than others.
I'm not sure about the people charging waaaaay too much for their stuff. I guess they don't want to sell it very badly.
      There is always next time.

I know the feeling about slow yard sales! I'm glad you were able to find some good deals elsewhere.

Garage sales are always hit or miss around here, mostly miss. You did good with the pillow and I absolutely love your urn and the tin. Both are wonderful. Your platter is fabulous too. All in all you wound up doing well. Hugs, Marty

I'll bet the over-priced garage sale kept most of their stuff. I do like that pillow though.

I was wondering about the unusual pricing too. Great finds at the VOA thriftstore.

      Have a great week! La

Hi Pam-Well, you did pretty good for not finding much of anything. I don't remember ever seeing those dishes with the "shadow" pattern on them. They do look like some of those ones that came in boxes of detergent though. Do you remember when they did that? Maybe it was Sears & Roebuck's boxes of detergent? There-we have solved a mystery. Not sure if it was solved correctly but it won't keep you up at night anymore-lol

I love the job you did with the tin container. Cute idea (I'll probably steal it and claim it as my own if my girls ask);>)

Okay-we have a few stores here in the Fox Valley Thrift Stores that price like that. I asked one of the girls one day and she said they are tax free because their money goes back to charity causes...& I can't remember if she said they don't pay Federal or State...but they paid something to someone..however they have to COLLECT tax but not pay that exact amount in...I dunno..sounded complicated to me. We will have prices like $3.94 and $2.87 is another common one. Weird, huh?

Okay-Waiting for my work day to get into full swing here-Hope your Sunday is a wonderful one! Diana

Great finds Pam, funny enough, I was at the GW store and the same thing with the pricing. Nothing was congruent, everything had different cent endings, I dunno what that is about? Better luck next week 🙂
